Shady Eyewear:
The Hottest Trends in Sunglasses this Summer
By: Shelisa Melendez
Summer is here and that can only mean one thing—the sun is out! Along with the summer weather comes flip-flops, shorts and oh yea, those cute things that go over your eyes. Whether you are packing your bags for a Caribbean vacation or a quick drive to the mall, your outfit is far from complete without a pair of sunglasses.

Yes fashionistas, the rumors are true; sunglasses are now a staple accessory (no ifs, ands, or buts, about it). Sunglasses are no longer just an outdoor accessory, but indoor as well. Just ask Anna Wintour, Editor-In-Chief of Vogue. Wintour is known to rock her shades at just about every fashion show she attends.

The aviator shape offers both a casual and dressy feel, depending on your look. Aviators can often be seen worn by celebrities in a casual white t-shirt and destroyed jeans.

The round-retro shape is a very vintage fashion look. The round shape makes a very bold statement, while drawing attention to your face.

Jackie O, Jackie O! This style was named after the first lady Jackie Kennedy, and has been a popular shape throughout the years. Covering your eyes, and then some, this style is usually many celebrities “paparazzi sunglasses.”

Regardless of the shape, many celebrities have been spotted wearing shades with a hint of color, or lack thereof. The latest color trends are reminiscent of a candy cane—red and white. Red framed sunglasses offer a boost of color to a simple outfit, or even help make a bold statement. On the other hand, white framed sunglasses offer a crisp or fresh look; adding a touch of sophistication.
While trends are always good guidelines to follow, they may not always be your best point of reference. According to unitedshades.com, sunglasses should fit in proportion to the shape and size of your face as follows.

For those with round faces, wide frames with a rectangular style look best.
Those with diamond faces, look best with oval, square, and rimless sunglasses.
And those with square faces look best with oval and cat-eye shapes.
A triangle shaped face looks best when wearing frames with a straight top line and cat-eye shapes.
Lastly, our oval faced fashionistas are free to rock any shape they desire (lucky you).

As the summer sun beats down for the next three months or so, take advantage of the opportunity to wear your “shady” pieces, no matter your destination. And remember, protecting your eyes can always be fashionable!

Famous eyewear designers such as Chanel, Prada, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana and Ray Ban are giving the term “sunglasses” a much deeper meaning. Sunglasses are no longer just an accessory; they have their own fashion shows, with their own trends and forecasts.

Popular shape trends this summer are the classic aviator, round-retro, and the Jackie O style. All three styles have been popular over the years. However, they have all made their way back into the trend cycle.
