Stay Healthy While You Get Healthy
By: Jules Perkel

ou feel invincible as you do your bicep curls- you think to yourself: “I’m getting strong and healthier by the day, nothing can break me”. You are one hot mama, but, even though you are getting fit at the gym, bacteria and viruses are thriving on the very same sweat that just dripped from your forehead.

For those who work out at public gyms we all have seen the bottles of anti-microbial spray used to wipe down the equipment. However, as a public gym user myself, I can’t tell you how many times I have neglected to wipe down sweaty equipment, or have seen other people neglect to do the same. According to a study done by ABC News in 2006, germs like E. Coli were found on gym equipment, and exposure was increased in gym showers and when working on fast circuit training machines like dumbbells.

Picking up Germs at the Gym
Ways to Stay Healthy(ier) at the Gym:
  • Wipe down equipment before you use it
  • Try to purchase your own yoga or Pilates mat and bring it with you to classes
  • Thoroughly wash your water bottles
  • Change and wash your workout clothes after doing at most 2 workouts in them
  • If you are sick with a cold, stay home. Missing one day at the gym won’t kill you.

Keeping fit while working out at the gym means that you exercise caution when using machines. Germs are everywhere but you can certainly take steps to make your work outs germ-less.
