How Well Do You Know Yourself

by Holly Lynn

How well do you know yourself? The question isn’t a typical icebreaker but it’s one you should ask yourself today, right now. Sure, we can all list off our favorite colors, food and TV shows, but even a long lost friend of yours could know those things about you. What are your talents, your weaknesses, your passions? Do you know how strong of an individual you really are? These simple questions can help direct you to the path of getting to know yourself more, but HMM wants you to take it a few bold steps further.

What are your talents, your weaknesses, your passions? Do you know how strong of an individual you really are?

If you are like the rest of us, you’ve probably had a spark of motivation to try something out of your ordinary routine. Maybe there’s a course at school unrelated your major you’ve been itching to take. Perhaps you’re wondering if a cooking class could make you the creative chef who doesn’t need a recipe to whip up something fabulous. Whatever situation your curiosity may want you to be in, go there and learn more about yourself.

Jumping into something new can be intimidating but you are capable of experiencing new, fun, exciting things that will teach more about you. Knowing where to begin is tricky, but the best starting point is to start with what you already know about yourself. Write down what you’re passionate about, what you know you’re good at, bad at, and what things really you enjoy doing. Now, recognize that you only know you enjoy doing those things because you have tried them. What have you not tried?

Make a list of 3-4 activities you want to give a shot. A fun suggestion is to try a new sport. If you’re at a university, there are intramural sports teams you could join or create. Get your friends together and make a team. Even if you’re not good at the sport you may discover you’re great at encouraging others or being a team leader. Another option is to take a tango class with your guy or bring a fun girl friend along. For women, taking tango will tell you if you do well being lead by others because your partner is supposed to be in control the entire time. Get to know how much stamina and strength you have by finding a local climbing center. In this sport it’s just you and the wall, so it’s the perfect opportunity to see how far you can push yourself when no one is watching. It’s even more rewarding to see how much progress you make over time in strength, speed, and coordination (if you have any of those!). Have you ever gone out alone to a movie or to eat? This is a great emotional step in discovering how self-sufficient and independent you can be.

This year, make it a resolution to give yourself the chance to try something new. Learn more about your likes and dislikes and know what you are capable of, and then use that to treat yourself to something you know you’ll love.
