HMM's 10 Questions with Celebrity Make-Up Artist Daniel Chinchilla
By: Mia Able

HMM: What beauty trends do you predict we will be seeing on the red carpet at the Oscars in March?

DC: You'll probably be seeing Spring make-up trends, which are smoky eyes, violets and eye color, washes of color (meaning taking your best feature and making it dramatic with color, so if your eyes are your best feature- a wash of purple and keep everything else neutral.) Dramatic cat eyes are back in as well as the whole no make-up look. It will really be one extreme to the other.

HMM: How can women at home get these looks?

DC: It's hard to explain, the best way is through pictures. [She] can Google "Spring make-up trends" or "runway trends for Spring" because that's where we get all the trends from - its from the runway. Also on my blog, I am always updating, I actually tell people how to do it, I go step by step.

HMM: How do you go about creating a color palette for a client?

DC: I always find out what they are wearing and I will play off of the accessories. I'll play off the silver or the gold or if they have jewels on like rubies. I'll usually use contrast colors to their jewelry. You never want to do green make-up with a green dress, that's like a make-up sin! I also play off of their eye color.

HMM: What should a woman always put on before walking out of the house?

DC: You should not be seen without mascara and blush. That's a must! If you dont want to put anything on the easiest thing is to throw on a little blush and some mascara. If someone needs to conceal a little bit more, I recommend a light foundation that's really easy to throw on and doesn't look like make-up to even out your skin tone. So...those 3 are it.

HMM: You fairly recently launched your cosmetics line in March 2009. What products do you have?

DC: Right now, it's just foundation. I wanted to stick to foundations becasue that is what women are always looking for. I wanted to make a good foundation because women try so many foundations and have a hard time finding one they like. I am obsessed with making skin look glowy and youthful.

HMM: Your foundations look like they were made especially for black women. How did you achieve such a complementary colors for African-American skin tones?

DC: That was really important to me- a lot of my clients are Latin and African-American. I have 13 foundation colors and all are yellow based because everyone has yellow undertones whether you are really light or really dark [skinned]. My foundations for darker skin have a little bit of a peach tone to them, but undertone is yellow so they match the skin perfectly. It was important for me to come out with the perfect colors, it took me forever but I had to get them perfect.

HMM: Any plans for expanding your cosmetic line in the future?

DC: No plans right now. I just want to perfect the foundation. I'd rathert have the one item that everybody loves. Maybe down the line some concealers or powders. I want to be the person who perfected one thing and didn't have 20 okay items.

HMM: How did becoming an instructor at The Elite Fashion Academy in Los Angeles come about?

DC: I got contacted by the owners of the school because I did an Ed Hardy shoot and I got recommended. They interviewed a bunch a people and they told me they would get back to me, but it's a really big deal.

HMM: What course are you teaching?

DC: The make-up artistry course for fashion. I'm gonna teach high definition make-up, fashion and runway make-up, and a little bit of body make up. Basically the full spectrum everything you need to know to work in the industry.

HMM: Where can we find your foundations?

DC: On my website, www.DanielChinchilla.com. It will be available to the students at Elite - it'll be in their kits. I am also working on a couple of stores right now. I have a lot if interests, so we'll see what's in the near future.
